Azerbaijan Elected to ITU Council
Azerbaijan was elected to the Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in a group of countries in the 'C' region (Eastern Europe and Northern Asia).The election was held as part of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan (Republic of Korea) from October 20 to November 7.
A Plenipotentiary Conference is the ITU supreme body, responsible for formulating the further policy of the organization. The conference, convened every four years, determines a general policy. Among the candidate countries for the ITU Council membership in a group of countries in the 'C' region were Azerbaijan, Poland, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Romania, Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
The election to the Council is held in five regions. Azerbaijan joined the Council, gaining 94 votes. Besides Azerbaijan, ITU Council includes Poland (133 votes), Bulgaria (124), Russia (124) and Romania (111).
Azerbaijan's membership in the ITU Council will last until the end of 2018. The next ITU Plenipotentiary Conference will be held in Dubai in late 2018.
