Hungary Considers Azerbaijani Gas as Alternative to Russian

"We need to look for new supply routes."

Hungary is looking for alternative ways of gas supply bypassing Ukrainian territory, to ensure security of supply, the Prime Minister Viktor Orban said.

"Hungary has excellent relations with Azerbaijan. Hungary is considering various options after the announcement of the closure of Russian gas pipeline project "South Stream", Orban said, quoted by Bloomberg.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin during talks in Turkey, said that Russia in the present circumstances can't continue the implementation of the "South Stream", including the non-constructive position of the European Union.

Previously, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siyyarto stated that the country needs to find new ways of gas supply in the long term after Russia's decision to close the "South Stream".

With regard to future alternative gas supply of Hungary, Siyyarto mentioned the possibility of obtaining energy from Azerbaijan to be delivered to Central Europe via the southern route, however, according to the minister, it is necessary to consider other options.
