Most Anticipated Events in Azerbaijan in 2016

The year of 2016 promises to be a remarkable period in Azerbaijan, as the country is holding several significant events in political, economic, sports, and cultural fields.

We have outlined ten important events that will enrich the national history this year.

1. Chairmanship in the GUAM

Azerbaijan has undertaken chairmanship at the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development from Ukraine for the next four-year term. Altay Efendiyev, former Azerbaijani ambassador to Spain, will replace the Georgian diplomat Valery Chechelashvili in this position.

The international regional organization established by Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine GUAM has a free trade zone, Virtual Center for fight against organized crime and operates other structures.

During Azerbaijan's presidency GUAM is expected to create a concept of transport transit corridor, and expand cooperation on specific projects with Japan and the U.S.

2. Global Forum of the UN Alliance of Civilizations

Baku will host the Youth Event at the 7th Global Forum on April 25 to 27, which is aimed at eliminating the tension between the West and Islamic world.

3. Commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars

The regional rail link project Baku-Tbilisi-Kars with total length of 826 km is scheduled to launch this year. The railway will enable to reach Turkey from Azerbaijan without transfer. The project will create an energy corridor by rail mainly supplied by Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan expects to finalize the electrification of the railway until mid-2016.

4. Grand Prix Formula 1

Baku will host the world's major race -- Formula One World Championship from June 17 to 19. The purpose-built track Baku City Circuit will be the venue of the race cars that will ride on Baku center with magnificent views of the Icherisheher (Old City).

The Baku route has a number of challenges, including an extremely narrow uphill section along the old town walls that will require pinpoint accuracy, and includes an acceleration section of almost 2.2 kilometers along the seaside promenade, which will see the racecars running flat out at very high speeds – creating a thrilling show for race fans.

5. World Chess Olympiad

The capital Baku will host the 42nd World Chess Olympiad, the third major international competition on the planet involving the record number of participants on September 17 to 30. Crystal Hall will bring together some 3,000 chess players and guests from 180 countries.

6. World Sailing Championship

Always open to innovations, Azerbaijan also has taken a responsibility to host the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in the Olympic class "470" on April 7 through 9.

The geographical location of Azerbaijan and Baku and appropriate weather conditions were chosen as successful venue for the competition considering one of the largest maritime event.

7. Year of Azerbaijani poets in UNESCO

2016 will also be significant year for the national culture, as UNESCO can declare this year of Imadeddin Nasimi and Molla Panah Vagif, prominent representatives of the Azerbaijani classical literature. In this connection the events are expected to be held both in Baku and in the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

8. Sheki: Cultural Capital of the Turkic World

Soaking up antiquity, Azerbaijan's beautiful city of Sheki was declared the capital of the Turkic world in 2016. For centuries this ancient city has long been a famous silk center and an important stop on the Great Silk Route.

This year the city will hold a wide range of cultural events, promoting its rich historical and cultural heritage of the people, and expanding the tourism potential of the region.

9. Opening of the Crescent City

This year Bakunians will also see the opening of the Crescent City, a prestigious 450,000 square-meter mixed-used building in the heart of Baku.

Designed to be a world-class landmark, the development includes a retail podium, residential and commercial towers and a 33-storey, seven-star hotel on an island in the Caspian Sea.

The Crescent Development Project is situated with one part on the waterfront of Baku. An offshore part, which includes The Crescent Hotel, will be located on an artificial island about 170 metres from shore.

10. Opening of the zoo in Jeyranbatan

The nation's new Baku Zoo project is also expected to accomplish this year. Located near Gumyatag Lake in Jeyranbatan, the zoo covering an area of 55 hectares will be able to have different sections, where the animals will not live in cages, and natural barriers will separate them from each other.

Some 1,518 animals of 224 species from different continents will find a new home at the planned zoo, which will be called Azerbaijani World of Nature. The natural environments of every continent will be created in the park; maintenance of the animals as well as disposal of waste products will be in full compliance with international standards.
