Kempinski Opens First Hotel in Baku

The five-star luxury Kempinski hotel chain opened its newest property in the Azerbaijani capital Baku on Saturday in a ceremony attended by President Ilham Aliyev.

The hotel, located in the Badamdar settlement of the city, has 283 rooms, 37 suites and 36 offices. The 14-story facility also contains an entertainment complex, shopping mall, spa, bowling alley, skating rink and other facilities.

President Aliyev lauded the arrival of Kempinski at the opening ceremony.

"I am delighted that such a beautiful hotel is beginning its operation in Baku," Aliyev said. "This will make our city even more beautiful. I am very glad that the hotel's exterior is also good-looking, and its facilities are on the highest level. Both the rooms and public places, as well as restaurants, entertainment facilities and lounges, are top-notch."

Aliyev went on to note that the hotel is further evidence e that Azerbaijan is a country where foreign investments are properly protected through domestic legislation and government policy.

"It is as a result of this that for many years Azerbaijan has been the leader in [the] CIS…[in] per capita foreign direct investment. Last year alone, about $16 billion was invested in the Azerbaijani economy. I believe that this year, investments will be even higher, thus creating new opportunities for Azerbaijan's comprehensive development."
