Azerbaijan asks for Shah Deniz proposals

Azerbaijan's state oil company has sent out a request for proposals for transit of gas from the Shah Deniz field to three main European pipeline groups.

The State Oil Co. of Azerbaijan said pipeline groups involved in the proposed Italy-Greece natural gas interconnector, Trans-Adriatic Pipeline and Nabucco are called on to provide it with information regarding the transit of Shah Deniz gas to Europe.

"The submission date to the request, which should include a tariff offer and associated terms and conditions, as well as detailed information on wider aspects of the projects, has been set for Oct. 1, 2011," the company said in a statement.

SOCAR said that Shah Deniz was a "giant project" designed to move natural gas from Azerbaijan to consumers in Europe and Turkey.

"It is one of the largest gas development projects anywhere in the world and the new Southern Corridor will substantially increase the security and diversity of European gas imports," the company added.

Europe is trying to break the Russian grip on the regional energy sector through a series of transit networks in the so-called Southern Corridor.

Azerbaijan is at the center of a regional energy race spurred by 2009 disputes between Russia and Ukraine, which hosts 80 percent of the Russian natural gas sent to European consumers.
