Major New Power Station to Be Ready Next Year

Azerbaijan's new Janub (Canub-Southern) thermal power plant is expected to come online in the first half of 2012.

"Construction of the station is proceeding on schedule. Basic equipment is now being assembled," the national power operator, Azerenerji, says in its report on the first half of 2011. The company did say last autumn, however, that the plant would become operational this year.

"The launch of the Janub thermal power plant will enable Azerenerji JSC to save an average of 700,000 metric tons of fuel per year," the company report said.

The Janub power station will have a capacity of 780 megawatts. It is being built in Shirvan to replace the current Ali Bayramli thermal power plant, the second largest in Azerbaijan.

The new station is unprecedented both in Azerbaijan and the region as a whole. New technology is being used in its design that will allow the station to use oil, gas and diesel fuel. The total project cost is $600 million.

The power station will be a key supplier to Baku and the Absheron Peninsula and the south of the country.
