USACC Met With Agricultural Commissioner and Council Member of Monterey County

Washington, D.C. – The United States – Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) held a meeting with Eric Lauritzen, Agricultural Commissioner of Monterey County in California, and Nancy Selfridge, a member of the City Council of Monterey on March 28, 2012.

The Monterey officials provided background information about their recent visit to Azerbaijan’s southern city of Lankaran. Monterey and Lankaran were named sister cities by a joint agreement signed last year during a visit by government officials from Lankaran to California.

Mahir Iskender, the Executive Director of the USACC, spoke about the myriad opportunities in the agricultural sector in Lankaran. He also mentioned several Azerbaijani businesses that have forged commercial ties with American companies. He pointed out the importance of establishing business partnerships with companies interested in bringing Azerbaijani products to the US market.

Mr. Iskender said the USACC intends to participate in the Food Show to be held in Washington, D.C. in early June. Council member Selfridge also invited the USACC to participate in a similar trade show to be held in Monterey in late August.

Mr. Iskender also spoke about the Azerbaijan Trade and Cultural Center (ATCC) and the work that has been done to promote Azerbaijani culture in the United States. He presented several recordings of Azerbaijani classical music and the book, “Azerbaijani Jazz.” The two parties also agreed to prepare a proposal for a joint cultural event to be held at the ATCC Gallery in Washington, D.C. in late summer.
