Bulgaria and Azerbaijan Agree On Caspian Gas Deliveries

Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have agreed on the delivery of Caspian gas, a deal Bulgaria hopes will ease its dependence on supplies from Russia.

Under the deal, which was signed in Baku, gas deliveries could start in 2014, provided that an operational gas link between Bulgaria and neighboring Turkey is built by then, the energy ministry said in a statement last Friday.

No financial details were released.

Bulgaria, which is almost totally dependent on Russian gas to cover its annual needs of nearly 4 billion cubic meters, is hoping to secure up to 1 billion cubic meters of Caspian gas in an effort to diversify its supplies.
