Digital TV, High-Speed Internet to Cover All of Azerbaijan

A high-level communications official says digital television and high-speed Internet is coming to all corners of Azerbaijan.

Deputy Communications and IT Minister Elmir Valizadeh said at a conference "From Traditional to Online Media" today that the advances in television broadcasts will be in place by the end of 2012. The improvements mean that Baku residents will be able to watch 24 channels of television programming. Residents in the outlying regions will be able to receive 12 channels.

He added that the Communications and IT Ministry has prepared a communications development strategy, according to which each settlement of the country will be provided with high-speed Internet through fiber optic cable. The fiber optic installation will be carried out jointly with the Azerbaijani State Oil Fund.

Azerbaijan is one of the most heavy users of mobile technology in the world. The country has 110 mobile phones for every 100 people. Each of the three mobile operators provide broadband services.
