Richard Morningstar Sworn In as U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan

It's official: Richard Morningstar is the new U.S. ambassador to Azerbaijan.

Morningstar, a long-time State Department official, was sworn into his new position at a ceremony July 20. The ceremony was followed by a meeting between Morningstar and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The U.S. Senate confirmed his nomination for the post of ambassador to Azerbaijan on June 30. The Senate Committee on International Relations approved the decision of President Barack Obama to nominate Morningstar as the next ambassador to Baku in April.

The United States has not had an ambassador in Baku since the departure of Ambassador Matthew J. Bryza in December 2011. President Obama appointed former Bryza, formerly a U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, as ambassador to Azerbaijan, bypassing the Senate on December 29, 2010, which for several months blocked his nomination under pressure of pro-Armenian senators Barbara Boxer and Robert Menendez.
