First Azerbaijani Telecommunications Satellite to Be Launched in January

Azerspace, the first Azerbaijani telecommunications satellite, is expected to be launched in January 2013, Azerbaijani Deputy Communications and IT Minister Iltimas Mammadov said last week.

According to Mammadov, the satellite is on schedule and in its testing phase.

The Azerspace satellite payload currently being built on the STAR-2 platform consists of 36 transponders, with the frequency of each transponder at 36 MHz. The satellite will be in orbit for an expected 15 years.

The satellite, which will be launched into a geostationary orbit at 46 degrees east longitude, is being leased from the Malaysian government-owned company Measat Satellite Systems.

Azerspace is designed to render digital broadcasting services, Internet access and data transmission to create multiservice networks VSAT and governmental communication.

Azerspace's service area will include the countries of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North Africa.
