Leyli and Majnun Opera Staged in San Francisco

The well-known opera Leyli and Majnun by renowned Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli was staged in San Francisco this past week.

The Azerbaijani Consulate General in Los Angeles said that the opera was staged during the San Francisco World Music Festival. It was the first time the opera has been staged in the U.S.

During a keynote speech at the event, Azerbaijani Consul General to Los Angeles Nasimi Agayev talked about the historic importance of Leyli and Majnun, the first opera in the Muslim world.

Also at the event, Agayev recognized artist and pianist Chingiz Sadigov for his work promoting Azerbaijan's music and culture in the U.S. and around the world.

Leyli and Majnun is a tragic love story, in which the male character Majnun (literally meaning "crazy" in Arabic) goes mad because he cannot be with his beloved Leyla.

The orchestra was composed of musicians from China, India, South Korea and the U.S., and was attended by an audience of more than 500 people.
