Heydar Aliyev Center Among Most Grandiose 2012 Architectural Projects

The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center in Baku is on Architectural Digest's top 5 of the world's 12 most grandiose architectural projects of 2012.

The magazine highlights that the center – built as a conference hall and museum – will play an important role in developing a new image for Azerbaijan's capital. The center appears in the article, "Big, Bold, and Buzz-Worthy Buildings in 2012," which the magazine says is a listing of "a dozen show-stopping architectural projects around the world that people will be talking about this year—and beyond."

The complex's construction started in 2007 and officially opened in 2012. Its aim is to study the statehood philosophy of the national leader of the Azerbaijani people, Heydar Aliyev, the idea of Azerbaijanism, and Aliyev's legacy.

The Center focuses on implementing projects that promote Azerbaijan's history, culture, language and national treasures, while supporting and improving science, education, culture, healthcare, sports, ecology and the economy.

Architectural Digest's list also includes the International Media Center in Beijing, London's Tower Bridge, the Queen Alia International Airport in Amman, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, New York, and others.

Established in 1920, Architectural Digest is a monthly U.S. magazine covering architecture and innovative designs from around the world.
