Rocket Begins Fueling for Azerbaijani Satellite Launch

Fueling the Ariane 5 ECA rocket at the Kourou launch facility in the French Guiana Space Centre will begin by the end of the week, Azerkosmos chairman Rashad Nabiyev said during a meeting with Azerbaijan's Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies.

Nabiyev explained that the Azerbaijani satellite Azerspace/Africasat-1, which will be launched into orbit by the French company Arianspace, has already been delivered to the launmch site in French Guyana. It is scheduled to launch on Feb. 7.

The satellite control center will be in full technical readiness by the middle of next week. Construction work on the reserve satellite control center – located on the territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic – has been completed.

The satellite will be launched into geostationary orbit at 46 degrees east longitude and is leased from Malaysia's Measat Satellite Systems, owned by the Malaysian government.

Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia and North Africa will all be included in the service area of Azerspace.

The satellite is designed to provide digital broadcasting, Internet access, data transmission, the creation of VSAT multiservice networks, and governmental communications.
