ESCAP: Azerbaijan’s TASIM Project – Key Route Between Europe and Asia

Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) project was noted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) as a key regional example of trans-border terrestrial connectivity, Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies said.

This statement was reflected in the ESCAP Conclusion and Recommendations on development of the Asian Information Superhighway (AIS), the Ministry said.

The document was posted on ESCAP's official website and can be found here. (hyperlink here to http://www.unescap.org/idd/events/2013-Expert-Consultation/Summary%20report.pdf

The document says that the TASIM project is meant not only to connect Europe and Asia, but also to become a key part of the AIS initiative.

"ESCAP and the TASIM Secretariat expressed mutual support for both projects, and will continue to work together to build a seamless information and communication space across Asia and the Pacific," the document said.

ESCAP's recommendations were published on the basis of results of Expert Consultation on the Asian Information Superhighway and Regional Connectivity, held on Sept. 24-25 in Manila, Philippines.

It was decided that the work group will develop a draft agreement on intergovernmental cooperation in line with the ESCAP Resolution 69/10.

ESCAP also expressed intention to consider the possibility of joining Eurasian Connectivity Alliance (EuraCA) as a stakeholder representing Asia and the Pacific.

Azerbaijan's initiative on creation of EuraCA has been supported by the resolution, adopted at the 68th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Countries such as, Israel, Turkey, Georgia, Belarus, Moldova, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Sri-Lanka and New Zealand joined the resolution as the co-authors.
