Washington DC – July 19, 2006 – On July 11-13, the United States-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) together with BISNIS/U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Trade and Development Agency and Consulate General of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles organized and co-sponsored two events, a Ministerial Briefing in Washington, DC and “U.S.-Azerbaijan ICT Forum” in San Jose, California. The events featured Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Dr. Ali M. Abbasov.

During his visit to the United States sponsored by U.S. Trade and Development Agency, Minister Abbasov led an Azerbaijani delegation comprised of government officials and representatives of leading Information Communication Technology (ICT) firms in Azerbaijan. The delegation held meetings with representatives of U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Commerce, the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation and a number of U.S. corporations specializing in ICT.

At the briefing in Washington, DC and the ICT forum in San Jose, Minister Abbasov informed participants representing various U.S. government institutions and private companies about the opportunities, developments and upcoming projects in Azerbaijan's ICT sector. In particular, Minister noted that the ICT sector in Azerbaijan has been growing at an average annual rate of 35-40 percent per year. He also discussed the State Program that has been developed by the Azerbaijani government to create better business condition for foreign investors in this area.

“The ICT sector represents an important segment of Azerbaijan's non-oil economy and its development is a top priority for the Government of Azerbaijan,” stated Minister Abbasov. He stressed that “Azerbaijan is an ideal location for U.S. ICT firms that are interested in expanding their business in the Caspian region. We will soon begin implementing steps for establishing Special Economic Zones to further improve the conditions for business in Azerbaijan.”

Minister Abbasov invited U.S. ICT equipment, service, software and consulting firms to come to Azerbaijan and participate at the 12th Azerbaijan International Telecommunications and Information Technologies Exhibition and Conference (BakuTel 2006) to be held in Baku on October 3-6, 2006.

In August, the Government of Azerbaijan is expected to announce the final results of tender offer for retaining an advisor to develop the structure for Special Economic Zones.
