Washington, D.C. - January 19, 2010 - The Azerbaijan Trade and Cultural Center in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan held an event commemorating the 20th anniversary of January 20, 1990.

On January 19-20, 1990 about 500 innocent civilians were killed and crushed by Soviet tanks on the orders of then-Soviet President and the Secretary General of the USSR Communist Party, Mikhail S. Gorbachev in Baku, Azerbaijan. January 20 was a turning point in Azerbaijan's history that led to the country's detachment from the Soviet Union and independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The commemoration event featured Ms. Betty Blair, the founding editor of the well-known Azerbaijan International magazine. Ms. Blair made a presentation about the historic events taking place 20 years ago and told the audience a story of the black January by narrating an article she wrote with the famous National Geographic photographer Reza Deghati when he smuggled himself in to Baku in January 1990.

The guests later watched a documentary "The Road to Black January" featuring the tragic events of the January 1990.

The event was attended by representatives of the US and Azerbaijani governments, Azerbaijani Diaspora in the greater Washington DC area and the friends of Azerbaijan.

The Azerbaijan Trade and Cultural Center (ATCC) was founded by U.S. Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce in September 2000 to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the United States of America and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
